Early Spring, Berry Creek
Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20
This is a spot we often go to, especially in early spring since it is the first place to have open water.
I was drawn by the contrast of the white snow and the
dark waters. I also found the subdued colours of the grasses and the winter
trees attractive. I especially liked the bright orange grasses along the far
bank
Fall on Berry Creek
Acrylic on canvas 18 x 24
This is also Berry Creek, but this time an early fall morning.
I particularly liked the
early morning mist rising from the perfectly calm water and the silhouetted
trees in the foreground. It was mid fall and the trees still had some colour and the loons still hadn't deserted us.
First Light
Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20
This was actually an afternoon in Feb, 2011, but I
changed the time of day from afternoon to early morning by using cooler
colours. The composition was improved by changing the complement and
arrangement of the trees and by emphasizing the mound of snow in the
foreground. I was particularly interested in capturing the effect of morning
light sparkling on the fresh snow.
Early Morning, Gohere Bay
Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20
This was painted from photos taken many years ago on Gohere
Bay, Lake of the Woods.
I wanted to capture the effect of the early morning light on
the still water. I purposely kept the detail to a minimum in the background
hills to help achieve the effect of a misty, early morning light. I was also
attracted to the silhouette of the foreground trees and canoe against the
background.
Time to Rest
Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20
This was my first use of photo-editing tools to work up a
composition. The original picture was
taken years ago somewhere in Sabaskong
Bay. The original photo had another large tree in front of the big one
I included in the painting. Using
Photo editing software, I removed it to improve the
composition.

Tofino Beach
Acrylic on canvas 18x28
This composition was worked up from several photos taken on Tofino
Beach in August of 2006.
It was a cloudy, misty day and the mountains were
barely visible in the distance. I was
drawn to the interesting patterns make by the water and the sane in the
foreground. The incoming tide can be seen on the background
On Whistler Mountain
Two paintings
12 x 16, acrylic on canvas
2011
Both paintings were done from photos and sketches of Whistler
Mountain.
While on the mountain, a thunderstorm washed over us.
White Pines
Acrylic on Canvas 18 x 20
This was an attempt at a more stylized style of
painting. I first used photo editing
software to simplify the composition, and worked up stylized drawings from
that.
The original photo included other trees, which interfered
with the composition.
